While Newsom has been a long time child care advocate, child care providers’ negotiations with his staff over health care and retirement funding have stalled.

On June 8, CCPU members traveled back to Sacramento to take their fight for health care and retirement directly to Governor Newsom’s office! Child care providers raised their voices after nearly a year spent meeting with the Newsom Administration has not resulted in meaningful movement on two issues of critical importance to the workforce: quality, affordable health care and the ability to retire with dignity. Providers have continuously been denied the opportunity to meet directly with Governor Newsom despite his history as an ally to their movement. This action comes after child care providers secured significant progress on their demands to be able to afford a basic health care plan and begin saving for retirement; their demands were funded in the Legislature’s joint budget agreement released last week. Still, Newsom’s staff has refused to budge on these critical concerns to the majority women of color workforce.
