State Budget Should Build a Pro-Worker Agenda for California 

 

SACRAMENTO, CA – SEIU California – 750,000 workers strong – welcomed a budget proposal from Governor Newsom that preserves vital services such as home care, healthcare, and child care and urged California’s leaders to invest in a working people’s agenda.  The following statement may be attributed to David Huerta, President of SEIU California and SEIU-United Service Workers West:

 

“A budget that preserves essential services working people rely on is welcome news as every increase in the cost of living in California leaves more people and families hungry, sick, and at risk of homelessness. To protect the progress we’ve made in California, working people will be fighting hard alongside state leaders to protect healthcare for millions of children and families, protect immigrant communities, preserve home care for vulnerable seniors and people with disabilities, and create family-supporting, union jobs – all threatened by Trump’s extremist agenda.

“The unprecedented uncertainty posed by the incoming Administration and increasing climate disasters like this week’s hurricane-wind induced fires means California’s leaders must partner with working people to address our affordability crisis with greater urgency. That means bringing down the amount families pay for housing, food, child care, long-term care, and health care. It also means holding corporations accountable for price-gouging and poverty wages, and fighting for greater access to good, union jobs, which will result in higher wages for families.”
